Research infrastructure

The school administers and developes significant national infrastructures. The research environments are located in Otaniemi and are openly at researchers' disposal.

Nationally significant infrastructures

The Nanomicroscopy Center, Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL) and Aalto NeuroImaging (ANI) research environments at the School of Science have been selected for Finland's strategy and roadmap for research infrastructures 2014–2020. The LTL and Nanomicroscopy Center as part of the micro- and nanotechnology research infrastructure in Otaniemi, and Aalto NeuroImaging as part of the up-and-coming national node in the European Euro-BioImaging project. The infrastructure of computational research Science-IT, is part of the Finnish Grid and Cloud Infrastructure, FCGI.

There are various different high-resolution microscopes at the Nanomicroscopy Center  (NMC), such as transmission electron and scanning electron microscopes, high-resolution surface imaging equipment and versatile x-ray dispersion apparatus. They lend support to, for example, imaging as well as the examination of soft materials, biological specimens and hard materials. Read more

Low Temperature Laboratory

Research infrastructure_Nano_RF_kryostat_200x200px.jpgThe Low Temperature Laboratory furthers scientific research and technical development efforts in low-temperature physics, quantum and nano electronics, and cryotechnologies.

The Low Temperature Laboratory offers researchers the opportunity to perform research work at temperatures below four degrees on the Kelvin scale all the way down to record-lows. The apparatus can also be utilised by hi-tech companies in their own research work.

Since 1994, the Low Temperature Laboratory has also functioned within the context of European infrastructure cooperation, whose aim, in recent years, has been to open the European ultra-low temperature infrastructure towards more comprehensive research use. Read more

Aalto NeuroImaging

Aalto NeuroImaging (ANI) is specialised in functionalResearch infrastucture_MEG_200x200px.jpg brain imaging with non-invasive manner. It is composed of three mutually supplementary equipment environments:

ANI’s research entity is utilised by, for instance, physicists, medical and computational science researchers, medical investigators, psychologists and linguists. Read more

Science-IT

Science-IT serves midrange computing and Research infrastucture_Triton_200x200px.jpgspecial resources needed by the School of Science and Aalto University researchers. Current research areas are:

  • method development
  • computational materials research
  • network research
  • neuroscience
  • data mining.

The school’s Science-IT is part of the Finnish Grid and Cloud Infrastructure (FCGI). The FGCI research infrastructure provides effective decentralised computational capacity for all branches of science as well as industrial cooperation for the utilisation of the newest grid and cloud technologies. Its goal is to combine resources from various parts of Finland into one broad platform for intensive, demanding computational tasks. Read more
