Schools of technology
The Polytechnic Institute was made a university-level school and renamed the Technological University of Finland in 1908. The school began moving its activities to Otaniemi in 1955. The formerly independent Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) functioned as the Aalto University School of Science and Technology throughout 2010. As of 1 January 2011 its activities continued in the form of four Aalto University (Aalto) schools of technology corresponding to the former faculties of TKK.
There are four schools of technology at Aalto with the School of Science being one of them. Below you will find a short description of the other three schools.
School of Engineering
School of Engineering combines science to engineering in order to achieve sustainable solutions that will be beneficial far into the future. Its specific task is to renew technologies related to the technical industry and the built environment through scientific research, and to educate broad-minded experts with a comprehensive understanding of complex subjects.
Research on focus areas are arctic technology, mechanics and materials, multidisciplinary energy technologies, sustainable built environment and systems design and production.
The School of Engineering (eng.aalto.fi/en) is based on the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
School of Chemical Technology
The School of Chemical Technology combines natural sciences and engineering in a unique way. The research priorities include: process technology, industrial biotechnology, biomaterials science, advanced metals and minerals recovery processes, active and functional materials.
The teaching of the school is also focused on these areas of priority.
The school is backed by strong cooperation with the business world: new knowledge created through research is used to reform Finnish industry and promote new forms of business. The strength of the school lies in the combination of high quality basic and applied research.
The School of Chemical Technology (chem.aalto.fi/en)is based on the Faculty of Chemistry and Materials Sciences.
School of Electrical Engineering
At the School of Electrical Engineering science and engineering meet society. The portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, the school develops ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. The school is expert in systems science. It develops integrated solutions from the care of the elderly to space robotics.
The research focuses on major social issues, that is, energy and environment, as well as health and well-being. The technological areas of focus are formation and communication technology (ICT) and micro and nanotechnology.
The School of Electrical Engineering (elec.aalto.fi/en) is based on the Faculty of Electronics, Communications and Automation.
